Digital Evidence Standards & Best Practices

Standards and best practices for identifying, preserving, and collecting digital evidence and evaluating law-enforcement methods.

Digital evidence should be identified, preserved, collected, examined, interpreted, and presented using reliable and documented methods. For the defense, recognized standards and best practices provide practical guidance for properly preserving and collecting digital evidence and for evaluating whether evidence obtained or examined by law enforcement was handled appropriately and analyzed using sound methods.

The Digital Evidence Toolbox, developed by the Digital Innocence Initiative (DII) as part of the National Digital Evidence Readiness Framework, brings together relevant digital-evidence standards, digital-forensics best practices, and technical guidance for defense attorneys, public defenders, and investigators.

Use these resources to identify, preserve, and collect digital evidence and to evaluate law-enforcement collection, forensic methods, and analysis.
